I have been reading Rosemary Mac Cabe’s funny and brutally honest writing for nearly a decade now and I was a lucky early reader of her incredible 2023 memoir, This Is Not About You (coming out in the US shortly). I knew the book was going to capture readers and the response has been huge since its publish. It chronicles Mac Cabe’s dating history and is something of a rallying cry for women to demand better for themselves, as told through darkly funny (or occasionally just dark) vignettes. It’s the book I wish I’d had as a young woman.
In our conversation, we discuss the perils of writing about your real life, the realities of publishing and the books that formed us. Mac Cabe also has some very comforting words about her process and there’s a very good Buffy analogy! I hope you enjoy the conversation, please do let us know in the comments!

PS I am very sorry about the lateness of this newsletter – it is technically last week’s newsletter (hangs head in shame). There’s been some very chaotic life developments in the last fews days including a husband in hospital (all will be well, don’t worry), some burst pipes and a four-year-old… well… just being a four-year-old – so no change there. Regular service shall resume, I promise.
